Nita Thakore, Design Educator and Artist

‘DESIGN TEACHING & LEARNING PRACTICES’ in the higher education sphere today calls for a fresh debate in terms of the efficacy of delivery, especially from an international standpoint. It considers the formal requirements for ‘research’ by higher degrees and defines the term ‘practice-led’.

There appears to be a critical need for contemporary debate in the area of design pedagogy across the discipline of Fashion/Textile Art, Craft & Design Education. Considering India’s rich cultural textile heritage and living crafts, there is a need to develop a deeper understanding of what the ‘world’ of Textile Art, Craft & Design Education here needs and how those needs can best be met with.

I believe that contextual research and resource can be an important factor in defining and elaborating this critical context to improve the teaching/ learning methods of related subjects through an amalgamation of archival, hands on, technical, visual, value based global-local approach.

Ongoing research would provide teachers with teaching artists/crafts people who have the ability to design and lead professional teaching/ learning through establishment of a shared vision for arts-crafts-design integrated instruction and thereby create an atmosphere for collective sharing of knowledge, resources and skills.
